The place is England. The year is 2013. Camelot has long since been lost to the pages of history, the once-great kingdom so obscure that it is presently considered legend. Belief in the Old Religion remains with only a few who have kept Gaius and Merlin’s traditions alive. All the creatures that once roamed free have withdrawn to their respective lands and become the subject of folk tales. Sprawling cities have sprung up across the country and in what was formerly Arthur’s territory. The Once and Future King’s castle now rests in ruins among overgrown grasses and a large forest. Most residents know the legend surrounding the remains, but very few believe it is actually Camelot. Nevertheless, the grounds have remained untouched, and as such have faded into obscurity.
The small town of Penningsley seems like any other town out in the English countryside. It sits in a clearing in the woods and has mountains to its west*. Just to its northeast rests a crumbled castle, once magnificent, and it is this castle which makes this small town less ordinary. Penningsley is the town closest to the ruins of Camelot. As such, all types of people have made visits to Penningsley. Some have come to see its small museum dedicated to local history and Arthurian legend. Others claim to be descended from knights or to possess the magic that Merlin once conjured, but they are indulged more than believed. Most visitors come for a week before returning home, but recently many have decided to stay. They have bought homes in the town, built small houses in the neighboring forest, and taken up residence in hotels. Lately, it seems, strange occurrences have been happening. Some of the residents of Penningsley believe its the fault of the newcomers, while some who hold to Arthurian legend believe it is a sign. Most, however, wave off the claims and go about their daily lives. What could be wrong in such a quaint, peaceful town?
* In this map Penningsley would be located roughly where the village "Howden" is found, just to the southwest of Camelot near the White Mountains.
